Is Silver a Useful Metal?

Silver is one of the earth’s precious metals. Along with gold, silver has been used as a standard of wealth for as long as metals have been mined. Silver has many qualities that make if more versatile, if not more valuable, than gold. Silver reflects almost all of the light that shines on it. This is why it is usued to make jewelry and tableware. Recently it has been discovered that a thin coating of silver over a serious burn will prevent bacteria from growing. The coating keeps the burn from becoming infected. Silver conducts heat and electricity better than any other metal – even copper. And silver is used in the developing of film, including x-rays.

Silver is abundant in Mexico and South America. In fact, “the Incas of Peru were known to be gifted silversmiths. India also has a great deal of silver, and the Soviet Union has many silver mines. Mexico, however, now leads the world in silver production.

She dressed quickly and ran down the stairs of the apartment house where she lived in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Her grandmother, who was drinking her morning tea, said, “Happy New Year, Lee Sook.”  “Happy New Year to you, too, Grandmother. Today is so exciting. I will be called by my Chinese name and there is the parade,” said Sandra. “Will you come watch the dragon with me?

“Of course, and why don’t we bring your brother along? Then we can all enjoy the parade.”

“All right,” said Lee Sook. She made a face. Her brother, whose Chinese name was Chung Lee, was four years old and could only walk a short while before getting tried. Lee Sook wanted to experience everything to day. She didn’t want to be held back by a little boy, but she also wanted to do what her grandmother suggested. So, Lee Sook, her grandmother, and her brother all went out together. Chung Lee immediately began to cry as the colorful dragons danced and swayed. “Don’t be afraid, Chung,” said Sandra. “This dragon is for good luck.” Chung’s eyes sought hers and he smiled.
